About IB

  • About IB

The International Baccalaureate was first registered in Geneva, Switzerland in 1968.  By 1970, 12 pilot schools were established in the United States.  In 1983, St. Petersburg High School was established as the first IB school in the State of Florida.

In the 2011-2012 school year, Largo High began the process of seeking authorization as an IB Diploma Programme, under the guidance of Principals Marjorie Sundstrom and Brad Finkbiner, along with Adam Lane, the first school's first IB Program Coordinator.  After nearly two years of planning and hard work, Largo High School was officially authorized as an International Baccalaureate Program in April of 2013.  The school held its first IB Pinning Ceremony in the 2013-2014 school year.

The IB Pinning ceremony is held to recognize our IB Juniors on their transition to IB Diploma Candidates in their 11th grade year.  This ceremony continues to be held each year.

    Our Program

The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end, the IBO works with schools, governments, and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment. These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

Our International Baccalaureate Programme is a rigorous course of studies meeting the needs of highly motivated secondary school students. Designed as a two-year IB Diploma preparatory and a two-year IB comprehensive curriculum, the International Baccalaureate diploma model incorporates the best educational elements of many countries.
