    Student Responsibilites

When a student borrows a library book, he/she is expected to take care of the book and return it on time. Books should be kept in a safe place, away from babies, toddlers, pets, food and drinks. Pages are to be turned with care and bookmarks used to save a place. Students will be charged a replacement cost fine if a book is damaged beyond repair or lost.

    Check-out Policies

    Loan period: 2 weeks

    Book allowance:

PreK, Kindergarten and 1st grade: 1 book after orientation
    Grades 2-5: 2 books

There are no overdue fines, but students with overdue books or lost/damaged fines may not check out additional materials until the books are returned or paid.

    Battle of the Books

Students in Grades 3-5 are encouraged to participate in the Battle of the Books. This program uses the fifteen Sunshine State Young Reader's Award titles. Students must read at least 5 books from the list in order to participate in the qualifying test in the spring. Class teams are chosen according to the highest scores, and the school "battle" is conducted like a quiz bowl. The winning team goes to a regional contest.

    Reading Counts Program

    Lexile Web Site

The Scholastic Reading Counts! program is designed to encourage students to read, to comprehend what they read, and to improve their overall reading ability. Students in Grades 3 and up take a Scholastic Reading Inventory test (SRI) to determine their Lexile levels, and they are encouraged to read books in their Lexile range (100 points below to 50 above).

All Pinellas County schools now have access to the entire range of Reading Counts! computerized comprehension quizzes that are available. When a student reads a Reading Counts! book and passes the quiz, he/she receives points. Prizes are given to the students for the points they have earned. We believe Reading Counts! plays an important role in the improvement of reading scores.

You may check inside the front cover of our library books for a Lexile and Reading Counts! points label, or you may visit the site above for Lexile levels.
