Lakewood High CAT students win Women in Tech competition

Five students from Lakewood High School represented Pinellas County Schools in the Young Women in Tech Challenge and took top honors in the competition. To address the need for more women in technology-related careers, the Women’s Conference of Florida formed a partnership with Hillsborough County Public Schools, Pinellas County Schools, Tech Data Corporation, and Tribridge to create the Young Women in Tech Challenge.

The Lakewood High students worked with staff from Tech Data Corporation and competed against five students from Strawberry Crest High School in Hillsborough County who were paired with staff from Tribridge. The contest asked the students to tackle the challenges young girls may face in preventing them from taking technology-related classes. The teams offered real solutions by researching the issue and creating a powerpoint and PSA.. The projects were judged by a panel of professionals in the technology industry. Lakewood’s winning students each received a laptop and a  $1,000 higher education scholarship. Visit the Lakewood team’s Facebook page for more information about their project.
