Pinellas art students and teachers honored at Carnegie Hall

Pinellas County students and teachers were honored at the 2017 Scholastic Art Awards National Ceremony at Carnegie Hall on June 8.
 
Aidan Schaffert and Marica James from Pinellas County Center for the Arts at Gibbs High School, and Kiara Rivera from Lakewood High School were awarded gold medals and were honored at the ceremony. Art teachers Jayce Ganchou, Yoko Nogami, Blaine Barden, Julie Smith, Steve Beverage and Karen Santangelo were also recognized.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in grades 7-12. Twelve Pinellas students  received 15 national medals, the largest number of awards Pinellas has ever received in the program. Students who received the gold medal were honored at Carnegie Hall.

Award categories include poetry, photography, sculpture, humor, editorial cartoons, and video game design. A record-breaking 330,000 works of art and writing were submitted for adjudication at the regional level this year. In their 93-year history, the awards have recognized some of America’s most celebrated artists such as Andy Warhol, Richard Avedon, Robert Indiana, Cy Twombly, Ken Burns, John Baldessari and Kay WalkingStick.
