New start times approved for next school year
April 10, 2018
Beginning with the 2018-2019 school year, many schools will have new start and dismissal times. Changes were made after an extensive review of start times by a district task force and input from families, students and employees. To move high school start times later, the task force reviewed various possibilities for adjusting times while focusing on safety and the ability of school buses to transport students on time.
On April 10, the Pinellas County School Board approved the new start and dismissal times: See Start and Dismissal Times for the 2018-19 School Year.
• Elementary and middle schools: Most schools will see start and dismissal times adjusted by 10 minutes. This does not apply to all schools.
• High schools: Most high schools will have a 7:20 a.m. start time and 1:50 p.m. dismissal. Four high schools (Boca Ciega, Dixie Hollins, Gibbs, and Lakewood) will start at 7:05 a.m. and dismiss at 1:50 p.m. to support the block schedule of eight periods.
• Other sites: Centers and several sites for Educational Alternative Services will have adjusted times.
For details, please review the new start and dismissal times for each school.
The new times will go into effect with the start of the 2018-2019 school year on Monday, August 13, 2018.
In upcoming school years, Pinellas County Schools will work to make further adjustments to school start times.
