PCS determines no hurricane make up day needed

September 6, 2019

Pinellas County Schools thanks the community for their patience as we monitored the impact of Hurricane Dorian to our area. The school district worked with Pinellas County Emergency Management and the National Weather Service to track the storm, prepare our schools for possible shelter openings and make the best and safest decisions regarding the closure of schools.

Our district was closed Tuesday, Sept. 3 in anticipation of severe weather and to ensure the safety of our students, staff, facilities and community. While we are relieved that the storm did not hit our area, we are heartbroken for those in the Bahamas and other areas who suffered the brunt of the hurricane.

Pinellas County Schools has reviewed state instructional time requirements and our 2019-2020 school calendar. The district determined that with only one missed day due to Hurricane Dorian, we will have enough instructional hours for this school year, and do not need to make up the day.

At this time, we will follow the 2019-2020 schedule as planned. Please recognize that there are twelve weeks left in hurricane season. If we experience any additional closures we will reevaluate the need to make up days.
