Elementary school student wins state Black History Month contest
March 5, 2020
Aidan Patel of Cypress Woods Elementary School won the Florida Black History Month essay contest.
The essay contest winners – one elementary school, one middle school and one high school student – each earned a four-year Florida College Plan scholarship provided by the Florida Prepaid College Foundation!
Aidan wrote about Mary McLeod Bethune, an American educator, stateswoman and civil rights activist who founded what is now Bethune-Cookman University.
This year’s theme was “Celebrating Untold Stories and Contributions of African Americans in Florida.” Aidan and the other award winners were honored during a Black History Month awards ceremony at the Florida Governor’s Mansion on Feb. 26.
