Students design artwork for professional golf tournament
Nov. 16, 2020
Harper Verplank of Ozona Elementary School and Lane Miller of Pasadena Fundamental Elementary School won the 2020 Pelican Women’s Golf Championship ticket design contest.
The contest was open to all PCS students in grades 2-5.
The Pelican Women’s Championship is a new event on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour. The tournament at the Pelican Golf Club in Belleair was supposed to take place in May. But it was rescheduled due to the pandemic for Nov. 16-22, with rounds beginning Nov. 19.
Each winning design will be featured as a virtual ticket on the website during competition rounds! Harper's design will be featured on Friday and Lane's design will be showcased on Sunday.
During a virtual Zoom event on Monday, Nov. 16, students were honored by professional golfer Emma Talley.
"What you have done is an incredible achievement and you should be proud of yourselves," said Talley. "Whatever you want to do in life, go for it!"
Students had an opportunity to ask Talley questions and were curious about how long she had been playing and what she liked to do for fun, besides golf.
Talley said she began playing at 9 and started playing competitively at 10. She told the students that she loves to travel.
Harper, 9, takes golf lessons, and Talley encouraged her to keep it up.
"You're right on track," said Talley.
