Middle school student awarded Florida Prepaid College Plans scholarship

Mya Turner, a sixth-grade student at Safety Harbor Middle, was presented a two-year Florida Prepaid College Plans scholarship by Sarah Painter, her fifth-grade teacher and the 2022 Florida Teacher of the Year. 

The value of the scholarship, presented on April 6, is up to $8,000.

Mya was chosen as the scholarship recipient after submitting an application and essays. She plans to use the funds to further her education and become a veterinarian. 

"You can do anything you want if you just follow your dreams and don't think about what other people say," Mya said.

Mya is "an extremely special student," Painter said.

"Mya was always a very driven student. She works hard, but more than that she's goal oriented," Painter said. "She knew exactly what she wanted in class and she would make sure she hit the steps to get there."
