Pinellas County Schools wins multiple awards at the Florida History Day competition

The district earned 12 awards, including two prestigious teacher recognitions and five special awards, at the annual competition. The Florida History Day contest took place May 1-3 in Tallahassee.
Jerry Span of Carwise Middle School was the Florida History Day Teacher of Merit. It’s the fourth year in a row that Pinellas has won the Teacher of Merit award, which honors an educator for creative history teaching in and out of the classroom.
Joshua Roberson of Seminole High School is the Florida History Day Teacher of the Year. He will be the Florida nominee for the Patricia Behring National History Day Teacher of the Year Award.
Five projects ranked in the top three in their categories. First- and second-place winners will compete nationally. Award winners came from Dunedin Highland Middle School and Seminole High School.

- 1st Place, Junior Individual Website: Ayden Khalil – Dunedin Highland Middle School
- 2nd Place, Junior Group Documentary: William Kent, Naveen Yengera, Owen Toal – Dunedin Highland Middle School
- 3rd Place, Junior Individual Documentary: Jahmari Muhqueed – Dunedin Highland Middle School
- 3rd Place, Junior Individual Performance: Aubrey Indorf – Dunedin Highland Middle School
- 3rd Place, Senior Group Performance: Jake Rice, Brendan Black, Jackson Bradley – Seminole High School
Special Awards
- Celebrate Freedom Award – Melisa Tatarevic – Dunedin Highland Middle School
- Florida Archival Research Award – Isabela Jantac and Jade Medel-Ho – Dunedin Highland Middle School
- Florida Historic Preservation Award – Jahmari Muhqueed – Dunedin Highland Middle School
- Military Heritage Award – Sophia Phongsackdy – Dunedin Highland Middle School
- Science Heritage Award – Jesielle Rosenberg – Dunedin Highland Middle School
Sponsored by the Museum of Florida History, Florida History Day (FHD) is an annual, statewide activity that enhances the teaching and learning of history in middle and high schools. Florida is an affiliate of National History Day® (NHD), which promotes history in the classroom.
The National History Day competition, which will be virtual, will take place June 13-17.
