Ceremony celebrates Cross Creek Chronicle-published writers

Writers receiving copies of the Cross Creek Chronicle

More than 150 elementary school writers were celebrated with a copy of their published works, the Cross Creek Chronicle, at the Palladium last week.

In its 23rd year of publication, the Cross Creek Chronicle honors kindergarten through fifth-grade writers in its compilation of submissions. Pieces are first submitted by classroom teachers and then blind-scored by an editorial board. The board only knows the writer’s grade level.

Writers were called onto the stage to receive a copy of the publication and were then treated to a reception, complete with cookies and a photo booth.

“We want our students to experience joy while writing and as a result of writing,” said Holly Slaughter, elementary reading and language arts specialist for Pinellas County Schools. “Publishing is part of the writing process that sends a powerful and unspoken message that writing deserves to be celebrated.”
