Pinellas school earns prestigious media center award

Sept. 13, 2023

Students explore in the Makerspace

Elisa Nelson Elementary has been chosen as a 2023 Florida Power-Library School.

The honor recognizes the collaborative leadership between Elisa Nelson Elementary Principal Hema Adhia, Library Media Technology Specialist Rachel Martin and the school community. The recognition lasts for five years and is awarded to schools that show a high level of library media expertise.

The media center is more than just a place to check out a book. It's called the "Hub" of the school, according to Principal Adhia. It is literally the hub of inquiry, innovative thinking and design. The media center is equipped with modern flexible seating, and inviting places for reading, learning and exploration, such as Makerspaces, reverse engineering and robotics spaces and a Lego Wall.

Martin collaborates with teachers to build lessons that are connected to reading and science standards. The media center functions as an extension of the classroom and is aimed at increasing student achievement.

Elisa Nelson Elementary will be honored at an award ceremony in November at the Florida Association for Media in Education Conference in Orlando.
