Congratulations to the East Lake High School Ethics Bowl Team for winning the regional Tampa Bay Ethics Bowl Competition.
The competition took place at the St. Petersburg College Clearwater Campus on Jan. 27.
Ethics Bowls are competitive and collaborative events where students discuss real-life ethical issues.
In each round of competition, teams take turns analyzing cases about complex ethical dilemmas and responding to questions and comments from the other team and from a panel of judges.
An Ethics Bowl differs from a speech and debate competition in that students are not assigned opposing views. They defend the positions they actually hold or think are reasonable and provide constructive criticism. Teams win by demonstrating that they have thought rigorously and systematically about the cases and engaged respectfully and supportively with all participants.
Congratulations to the coach, Social Studies teacher, Meagan Blum, and the winning team:
The East Lake High Ethics Bowl Team will compete in a divisional playoff on Feb. 8. If they win, they will head to the national competition held at the University of North Carolina’s Parr Center for Ethics in April.
