June 6, 2024

Substitute teachers Pinellas County Schools human resources department honored more than 125 substitute teachers from across the district at the 10th Annual Substitutes of the Year event Wednesday at the Stavros Institute in Largo.

Each school selected one substitute, classroom assistant or instructional substitute to be recognized. Fifty substitutes and their guests, as well as District staff, attended the event.

During the 2023-2024 school year, 1,700 substitutes covered 72,000 teacher absences district wide.

“We want to show these employees our appreciation and let others know that PCS cares about our substitutes,” said Melissa Hill, senior human resources specialist.“They are such an integral part of our schools. They seamlessly fill the gaps, ensuring that our classrooms continue to operate smoothly even in the absence of the regular teacher or classroom support staff. They adapt to different environments, curriculums, and students’ needs.

They come in like heroes when we have a need, and most importantly, they truly care about our students," she said.
