David Koperski Award Recognition

School Board Attorney David Koperski was honored for excellence in the profession at Tuesday's regular School Board meeting.

John Palmerini, President of the Florida School Board Attorneys Association (FSBAA), presented Mr. Koperski with the 2024 C. Graham Carothers Award of Excellence.

Carothers, one of the founders of FSBAA, had a reputation for being knowledgeable and supportive.

"(Carothers) always had time to assist. Ninety-nine out of 100 times, he knew the answer off the top of his head, citing the appropriate case or statute and oftentimes directing the lawyer to the specific spot on the page where the answer could be found," said Palmerini, quoting an FSBAA bio. "That reminds me of David to a T."

Koperski has worked as an attorney for Pinellas County Schools since 2005. He was appointed Pinellas School Board Attorney in 2012 and has held various FSBAA leadership positions, including president.

Palmerini said that School Board attorneys could always rely on Koperski in challenging times, especially during the pandemic when they were facing issues they had never faced before.

"He has the integrity to give you the correct answer," Palmerini said. "He has the ability to do it with kindness. And I can't think of anybody who is more deserving of this award than David (Koperski)."
