Journeys in Journalism announces 2020 Cynda Mort Scholarship winners

Two Lakewood High seniors were awarded a $2,000 scholarship. Julianna Raymond and Jade Marks were notified Thursday by surprised visits from district staff and teachers via a car parade in front of their homes. Both students are in the district’s Journeys in Journalism magnet program.
Julianna is the managing editor for Lakewood’s Spartan News Network newspaper, which has been nominated for three Silver Crowns from Columbia University in New York. She began working in the Journeys in Journalism program at John Hopkins Middle School and found she had a passion for writing stories for the newspaper there. Jade developed his skills as a video journalist starting his freshman year. Jade is Lakewood High’s valedictorian and hopes to have a career as a videographer.
In its sixth year, the Cynda Mort Scholarship for Outstanding Scholastic Journalist is awarded to seniors from Lakewood High School who are in the Center for Journalism and Multimedia. Since its inception, $23,000 in scholarship funding has been awarded to graduating seniors.
