Weekly Update for the week of August 28th
Good afternoon, Osceola Middle School Families. This is your principal Derrik Craun providing you with your weekly update.
First of all, I want to thank all the families that were able to make it out to our Back to School Night event Thursday which was a huge success as it is always good to meet your child’s teachers and learn about all we do at OMS.
Also, I want to thank all the students and families that are taking part in our schoolwide fundraiser. We are so grateful for all the support and participation in our Next Level program so far as the proceeds go back to supporting our school’s PBIS program and enrichment classes. Our fundraiser program is in full swing, but there is still time to get involved. Please log back into your personal donation page to ensure that your child has reached their goal. Every dollar raised makes a difference and if you would like to donate yourself, there is still time. Just click on this link in the email update:
https://app.pop4kids.org/OsceolaMS33777 All cash and check donations are due by 9/5/2023. Please turn in cash and check donations in an envelope, with your students’ name on it, to the main office. Weekly Update for the week of August 21st
Good afternoon, Osceola Middle School Families. This is your principal Derrik Craun providing you with your weekly update.
Last week was another amazing week for our OMS Chiefs where we accomplished a lot. By now all students should have their school issued laptops. If your child missed receiving theirs this week, we have a process to make sure they receive them in their science class Monday.
Looking ahead to this week, we have a lot going on beginning with our OMS Fundraiser kickoff Tuesday morning during enrichment. Your child will receive a Golden Ticket flyer sent home Tuesday with directions on how you can help raise money for our school. It is a very simple fundraiser where no selling required. Most fundraisers required supporters to purchase overpriced items that most times they don’t really want to support the school and this is just for those who would like to donate a little for the school. All proceeds will go back to our students to purchase items for our PBIS program and school wide activities and events. I have attached a copy of the flyer to the email update.
This Thursday August 24th, all OMS students and families are invited to join us for our “Back to School Night” event which takes place from 5:30-7:30pm. For this event, we will run a mock school day where we begin promptly at 5:30pm in your child’s 1st period classroom. 1st period teachers will play a welcome video then share with you their classroom routines and an overview of what they will learn this school year. Each class period will be 15 minutes long with a 5 minute passing period so make sure you are not tardy to your next class. All teachers will share contact information with you in case you have questions or would like to share anything with them about your child but remember that this night we are just learning and won’t have time to hold individual conferences during this event. On Thursday after school, your child will bring home a schedule for you to follow which I have also attached. For the sake of time, we will not have a period for visiting enrichment.
Looking ahead, don’t forget we have Picture Day on August 29th which you can order those pictures now. I have included the link on the email update as well as posted on our website. August 30th at 5:30 will be our Student Advisory Committee or SAC meeting followed by PTSA at 6pm in our media center where all are welcome to attend both.
In athletics, last week we finished up tryouts for our boys and girls volleyball and this year’s teams are now set. As we prepare for upcoming cheerleading tryouts, an informational meeting will be held in room 4-209 (Ms. McAllister’s classroom) this Thursday, August 24th for any students interested. Tryouts will be held August 28-31, from 4:15-5:15. We also will have our first cross country team this year for long distance running. There was an informational meeting yesterday for this but if your child missed that it is not a problem. You can contact our cross-country coach Mr. Willey for information or questions at willeym@pcsb.org . Both cheerleading and cross country require the athletic participation form, a current physical, and school supplemental insurance to tryout which I have attached the links to the email update. If students turned in paperwork for volleyball tryouts, they are covered for all athletic participation this school year.

Last, this week’s guidelines for success focus is on being Respectful as teachers will award PBIS points to students for follow classroom rules as well as modelling kindness and positive interactions with peers and staff as our Chiefs always do. For this week’s Fun Friday Tee Day, students can wear a purple shirt to show support of National Women’s Equality Day. The purple shirt can have print on it for Friday in case your child does not have a solid purple shirt.
Those are all the announcements for this week. Thank you Chief parents for your support and have a great weekend!
Weekly Update for the week of August 14th
Good afternoon, Osceola Middle School Families. This is your principal Derrik Craun providing you with your weekly update.
First off, I want to thank everyone students, staff, parents, and guardians for a great start to our school year. Parents, thank you so much for making sure your child was prepared for that first day. I was very impressed by seeing nearly all of our students arrive with their school wide binders and in compliance with our modified dress code. It was also great to see the excitement on all of our student’s faces and our students adjust to our processes so quickly. We had a busy day Friday as all students took part in their grade level assemblies and ended the day Friday with our 1st OMS pep rally. Congratulations to the 8th grade for winning the Spirit Stick for having the best participation in wearing their class colors and earning points in the pep rally competitions. As a result, they will earn a “dress down day” next Friday August 18th where they are allowed to wear shirts with print of their choice on them for the day. In addition, I was challenged in the pep rally to make a shot to earn a dress down day for the whole school and since I was given the basketball on half court but not told exactly where I had to make it from, I was able to make a layup for the win so all students will have a dress down day on September 1st. I will remind you of that day the week before.
Looking ahead to our week ahead, we will begin distributing student laptops this week. We will start with 8th grade on Monday, 7th grade on Wednesday and 6th grade on Friday during science classes. Remember to make sure your child has a way to protect their laptop whether it is the binder/laptop case in one or a separate case.
Also taking place this week will be tryouts for our Boys and Girls volleyball teams. Tryouts will be after school from 4:15 until 5:15 pm and any student participating in tryouts must have their athletic paperwork completed and can take with them to tryouts.
- Participation Form found on https://www.pcsb.org/Domain/166 -right hand side
- Physical within the last calendar year
- School Insurance (REQUIRED even if they have health insurance) https://www.pcsb.org/Domain/166 - right hand side
Also, if your child plans on trying out, please make sure their ride is ready to pick up in our car circle promptly at 5:15.
Parents, I want to thank you all for your patience in our carline for the first two days. It will continue to be more efficient each day as we perfect the process. Again, please make sure your child is ready to get out of your vehicle once you pull all the way down to the end of the sidewalk or the car in front of you. This will keep the line flowing and most efficient.
Last, as part of our PBIS program, each week we focus on one of our three guidelines for success which next week we will start with being Responsible. This means making sure we bring our materials to class, be on time to each class, and making sure electronic are put away and laptops fully charged. Also, each Friday we have what is called a Fun Friday Tee Day where we allow a specific shirt on that day if a student chooses to participate. Our first Fun Friday Tee is this Friday and all students are allowed to wear a college shirt of any university of choice.
That’s all the announcements for this week. Thank you Chief parents for your support and have a great weekend!
