Weekly Update for the week of November 27th

Good afternoon, Osceola Middle School Families. This is your principal Derrik Craun providing you with your weekly update.

As we return Monday from Thanksgiving Break, we have a few events taking place this week.  Monday, the remaining school pictures will be distributed to those who placed orders.  If you would like retakes of the photos ordered or if your child missed picture day, those will be on Friday of this week. It is not too late to order pictures if you missed out.  Just go to www.leonards.com/order and use access code 13778423. You can order the picture they already took which students will receive a sample in their Language Arts class on Monday, or take a retake on Friday morning.

In athletics, our Girls basketball team plays home after school at 4:40 on Monday and Wednesday while the boys team plays away at Morgan Fitzgerald on Tuesday and at Lealman on Wednesday.  Also Wednesday, we will hold our monthly SAC and PTSA meetings with SAC beginning at 5:30 and PTSA following after at 6pm in our media center.  All parents are welcome to attend both meetings.

Congratulations to Ms. Costi and her Enrichment class for winning our first annual Future Cities Design Challenge Competition.  They will move on to present and compete against other middle schools at the PCS School Board conference room this Friday, December 1st.  I was truly impressed with the over 40 projects our students created over the last few weeks as the judges has a difficult time selecting just 1 winner.

The Take Stock in Children Scholarship Program application window has been extended. The Take Stock in Children Program is a scholarship program where students receive mentoring, college readiness coaching and a Florida Prepaid Scholarship when they graduate high school.  The application and informational flyer is attached to the email update.

The ESE Career, College and Life Fair will be held on November 29th, from 6:00-7:30 pm at Pinellas Technical College, Clearwater Campus, Building 10. The Fair is open to families with students with disabilities from ages 12 thru 22. The fair includes over 70 vendors from local colleges, agencies and Pinellas County School Departments. If your family has any questions regarding the fair, please contact Katia Roussos at 588-6482.

OMS parents, thank you so much to those who donated non-perishable food items as we were able to feed 15 families for Thanksgiving.  We will now continue to collect items for Christmas so if you would like to donate, you can send items with your child, drop them off in the car circle or front office.

Last, our Guideline for Success focus next week is on being Active Learners and our Fun Friday Tee Day is to wear an OMS spirit shirt.

That’s all the announcements for this week. Thank you Chief parents for your support and have a great weekend!

Weekly Update for the week of November 13th

Good afternoon, Osceola Middle School Families. This is your principal Derrik Craun providing you with your weekly update.

As we head into our last week before Thanksgiving Break, we have a few events taking place this week.  On Wednesday, we will have our Great American Teach In Day where several guest speakers will be with us in various classes to share their careers with students. Thursday we have our Future Cities Design Challenge competition through our Enrichment classes where each class will compete against another to then earn their way to a face off on Friday where 1 winning class will be selected to represent our school on December 1st at the Pinellas County School Board conference hall to compete against 5 other middle schools.  Thursday evening there is a spirit night for OMS at Sky Zone where students will have a discounted price to attend and a portion of the proceeds of sales go back to our school.  This takes place from 4:30-8 pm and the flyer is attached to the email update.

Parents for 7th and 8th grade students, attached to the email update is a flyer inviting you and your child to attend the South County Performing Arts Fair for an opportunity to meet the high school directors for band, chorus, dance, orchestra, and theater!  You will get to hear student performers and learn about high school performing arts programs for several area high schools. This event takes place on Wednesday, November 29, at 6 pm at Azalea Middle School. Don’t forget also, Seminole High School will be holding an inaugural Wally Warhawk Fall Festival to support community engagement and the Warhawk Way!  This event is set for Thursday, November 16th from 6-8 p.m. Families may come and go at will throughout the evening for this event.

As Thanksgiving soon approaches, we are collecting non-perishable food items for families in need. If you are willing and able to donate, you drop off items in our front office, car line, or send with your child. Our goal is to feed 20-25 families this year so any support is much appreciated. Thank you to the families who have already donated as we are getting close to meeting our goal.

On last reminder, parents, if you have to pick up your child for early dismissal, please do so before 3:45 as after that time it creates congestion in our front parking lot and takes space away from parents who need to pick up students who need accommodations.  Please also try to avoid early pickup as much as possible as we do not want our students missing class as much as possible.

Last, our Guideline for Success focus next week is on being Respectful and our Fun Friday Tee Day is to wear either a college shirt. The 7th grade has earned a dress down day Friday for winning the Spirit Stick at our last pep rally so they are allowed to wear any shirt with print in line with Pinellas County Dress Code.
