Parent Update for New Chiefs (June 15th, 2023)
Good evening, Osceola Middle School Families. This is your principal Derrik Craun calling to welcome you to OMS and provide you with some important information in order to ensure your child is prepared for the upcoming school year.
As our first day of school is not until August 10th, it will be here before you know it. In the meantime, I want to make sure students and families have multiple opportunities to become familiar with our campus and learn all about our school’s processes, procedures, and activities.
Our next opportunity will take place the last week of June as our administrators will host OMS campus tours June-26tt – June 29th. For this event, we will begin in the media center for a 30 minute review of our schoolwide expectations and processes followed by a brief tour of our campus. These optional sessions will take place at 2:30, 3:30 or 4:30pm that week and parents can sign up by clicking the link on the email version of this message or by visiting our OMS website. On July 27th, we will hold our annual “Peer Connect” event for all incoming 6th graders. For this opportunity, we have 2 options available on taking place from 9-11am or one from 5-7pm. For our Peer Connect event, students will get the opportunity to meet new friends, get to know our campus, receive their free lock with locker assignment and purchase OMS swag and PE uniforms if needed.
On August 8th, all OMS students are invited to join us for our “Chief Community Day” event which takes place from 9am-12pm. All families are welcome to come enjoy community vendors, meet our teachers, receive their schedules, and much more.
In addition to all our events, I would like to also inform you of some exiting new initiatives for next school year. As OMS is one of 6 pilot schools for a new middle school experience, we will be providing all students with a 30 minute daily enrichment period. This enrichment time provides students with additional opportunities to participate in thematic competitions, hands-on activities, physical movement, and design challenges. Students can chose an area of interest by using the QR code or clicking the enrichment link on the email version of this message or on our website. Students are to select their top 3 choices and we will do our best to pair them with the enrichment theme they are most interested in for this school year.
And last, I would like to share with you the materials we would like each student to have in order to be middle school ready. Next year our main focus for student success will be on organization. As students will be required to carry their school provided laptops to every class and utilize a school wide 3 inch binder to hold their focus notes and handouts for each class, I would like to recommend everyone has this all in one. Although students can carry a laptop case and 3 inch binder separately, there are several combination binder/laptop cases that can be purchased to make it easier for the students to carry. I have included a link of a sample on the email version of this update as well although there are many different styles to choose from. The only other materials needed to start the year would be to have 6 binder dividers, pencils, loose leaf paper, and at least 4 spiral notebooks.
I apologize for this message being so long but hope it is helpful for you to plan for our first day on August 10th and help for a smooth transition to middle school.
I am excited to work with you all for the next 3 years and look forward to meeting you if I have not already.
Enjoy the rest of your evening Chief parents!
