The Process for Becoming a Substitute Teacher
- Successfully complete the online application including complete life/work history from high school until present or the last 10 years.
- Provide two professional references for work within the current year utilizing the email option on the application.
- Successfully complete the required Substitute Teaching Training Program. (Please see Training Requirements below). The asynchronous online training may be completed while filling out the application.
- Provide official transcripts showing 60 credit hours or more and teaching certificates (if any) with the application.
- Interview via TEAMS may be required.
Official electronic college/university transcripts are to be directly issued by the college/university to the intended recipient name: PCS HR and email: onlineapplication@pcsb.org

As part of the process to be employed by Pinellas County Schools, it is required that you have a valid email address, a social security card, a current valid driver license or state-issued identification card, and meet the minimum qualifications of the position for which you are applying. You must be currently authorized to work in the United States.Please review the e-verifying poster below (Federal Law requires all employers to verify the identity and employment eligibility of all persons hired to work in the United States).

Prior to beginning the online application process, gathering the following items will help in completing the application.Personal Data:
Certification and license documentation
High School/GED information and Colleges/Universities attended, degree earned, major subject, and graduation date(s). Certification/License type, subject/endorsement, date of issue and expiration. Colleges/Universities attended along with their city, state, and dates of attendance.
Work Experience from high school graduation date to the present
Supply the name, city, state, immediate supervisor, phone number, and years employed.
Criminal History Documentation
Legal disclosures – incidents pertaining to criminal history
List of references
Two (2) professional references are required to complete the application, including name, title, organization, work phone, home phone, and email address available. One must be from your current or most recent employer, all within the last 12 months. Volunteer work references are acceptable if you are not currently employed.
References cannot be from family, close friends, or co-workers. However, they can be from previous employers or community leaders, clergy, etc.In order to complete the application process you will need to send the following documents, if applicable, to Human Resources in addition to completing and submitting the Online Application.- Official transcripts from all universities and colleges attended

- Substitute Handbook Quiz Complete Quiz-80% or Higher
- Print a copy of your passing score or scan/upload a PDF of the passing score to your application attachments.
Requirement #2
- Please watch: Active Threat Training Video
- Active Threat Training Quiz Complete Quiz-80% or Higher
- Print a copy of your passing score or scan/upload a PDF of the passing score to your application attachments.
Requirement #3
(Optional for applicants with previous teaching experience and Level 3 interns.)

- Complete the STEDI Quiz-85% or Higher
- Print a copy of your passing score or scan/upload a PDF of the passing score to your application attachments.
*Once hired, a School Shadow Opportunity will be offered to all interested applicants and highly recommended for applicants with no teaching experience.

Substitutes Must Be Able To
- Work a minimum of four (4) jobs per month
- Work a minimum of two (2) Mondays or Fridays per month
- Be available to accept jobs after all hiring requirements and training have been completed
- Follow the designated work hours for each job selected
- Maintain the physical and emotional stamina to perform the duties of the Substitute Teacher (See the Teacher, Substitute job description for more details)

Classroom Assistant Substitute Information

The Process for Becoming a Classroom Assistant Substitute
- Successfully complete the online application including complete life/work history from high school until present or the last 10 years
- Provide two professional references or 1 professional reference and 1 character reference for work within the current year utilizing the email option on the application.
- Successfully complete the required Classroom Assistant Substitute Training Program. (Please see Training Requirements below). The asynchronous online training may be completed while filling out the application.
- Provide high school diploma or GED with the application

While you are waiting for your references to be returned, please complete the following online trainings. Once your application and your trainings below are complete, please email SubDocs@PCSB.org Subject Line: “CAS-Application and Trainings Complete” to schedule your fingerprint/onboarding appointment.

Classroom Assistant Substitutes Must Be Able To
Classroom assistant substitutes provide instructional support for students with special needs and accommodations under the direction of one or more Exceptional Student Education (ESE) teachers when the Medical Behavioral Assistant or Para ESE is absent. Classroom assistant substitutes may also work with students with special needs and accommodations in the general education classes under the direction of one or more general education teachers.
- Work a minimum of two (2) jobs per month

- Follow the designated work hours for each job selected

Am I eligible to ride the bus with students if the site needs a substitute to ride the bus?
If you are in an extended substitute position of 5+ days, have taken the additional bus trainings, and the site needs a substitute for the bus, you would be eligible.
