Pinellas County Schools 2016-17 Approved Budget

The Pinellas County School Board reviewed the district's proposed annual budget on July 26, 2016 at the First Public Hearing on Budget. The Second and final Public Hearing was held on September 13, 2016, at which time, the 2016-17 budget was approved by the School Board. Both Public Hearings were held at 6:30 p.m.

The School Board approved a total property tax rate of 7.318 mills, which amounts to about $7.32 for each $1,000 of assessed property value. This rate is slightly lower than the rate levied for the 2015-16 fiscal year. The property tax rate also includes the local referendum, a one-half mill tax that Pinellas County taxpayers voted to renew in 2008 and 2012, both times by large margins. For information about the local referendum, visit our special website; Referendum 411.

General Operating Fund
A crucial portion of the budget, about 63 percent, is the operating fund .This fund is the primary budget for the day-to-day operations of the school district. The main source of revenue for the nearly $928 million is the Florida Education Finance Program (FEFP), which gleans much of its state revenue from sales taxes and much of its local revenue from property taxes.

Capital Projects
Capital Outlay funds are used for major construction, renovations and remodeling projects as well as certain types of major equipment purchases. Among other capital fund appropriations, the district is allocating $103 million for renovations and major construction at Cypress Woods Elementary,  Melrose Elementary, Orange Grove Elementary, Pinellas Park Middle, Career Academies of Seminole, and Lakewood High. District Strategic Plan
The 2016-17 budget aligns with the District Strategic Plan. Find out more about the Strategic Plan here.
