Pinellas County Schools 2012-13 Budget:

The Pinellas County School Board approved the district’s $1.2 billion annual budget on September 11, 2012.

The School Board also approved a total property tax rate of 8.302 mills, which amounts to about $8.30 for each $1,000 of assessed property value. This rate is slightly lower than the rate levied for the 2011-12 fiscal year. The 2012-13 rate, along with a decline in local property tax values, will raise about $16.27 million less than last year’s millage rate.

The property tax rate also includes the local referendum, a one-half mill tax that Pinellas County taxpayers voted to renew in 2008. For information about the local referendum, visit our special website: Referendum 411.

Operating Fund

A crucial portion of the budget is the operating fund. Also known as the general fund, the operating fund is the primary budget for the day-to-day operations of the school district. The main source of revenue for the $812 million operating fund is the Florida Education Finance Program (FEFP), which gleans much of its state revenue from sales taxes and much of its local revenue from property taxes.

The 2012-13 operating fund contains $12 million in budget reductions, including a savings of $6 million for health insurance premiums. The cuts also include a reclassification of some general fund expenditures to the food service fund, potential reductions in departmental discretionary budgets and reductions in contracted services, purchased services and overtime payments.
