After-School Snack Program

    • Provides a nutritious snack from two or more different food items to help students meet their nutritional needs between the lunch and evening meal
    • Provides reimbursement (paid, reduced-price, and/or free) to participating schools and residential child care institutions for providing reimbursable snacks during the school week in a supervised educational afterschool program

    The After-School Snack Program Benefits:

    • Allows students additional access to fruits, vegetables, milk and whole grains, many of which are locally grown Florida products
    • Provides additional school-based educational and enrichment opportunities for students in afterschool care settings

     

    In FY 2020, the program provided an average of 846 thousand snacks daily and 119 million total snacks. About 91 percent of snacks were served in high-need area eligible schools in that year. In FY 2021, the first full fiscal year of the pandemic, the program served an average of 474 thousand snacks daily and 87 million total snacks, about 85 percent of which were served in high-need area eligible schools.
