  • Within the validity period of each certificate, teachers must earn a total of 120 Component Points of Professional Development.

Teachers with more than four subjects on their license will need an additional 60 Component Points.

Routes to Earn 120 Component Points

    • Six semester hours of college credit* (two, three credit, college courses)
    • Inservice Points
      • 60 in-service points are equivalent to three college credits.
    • Florida Subject Area Test
      • A passing score is equivalent to 60 Component Points, or three semester hours.
      • Must align with subjects on an existing license.
    • National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) Certificate
      • Must be a valid certificate.
      • Will renew a Florida certificate for subject(s) shown on the NBPTS certificate.
    • Teaching College Level Courses
      • Teachers who teach college-level courses can earn credit hours covered in the course.

*Note: If educators would like to use college credit AND in-service points to renew their certificates, they will need to affiliate with renewal application and processing fee with District - 100, the Department of Education, so they can review the official transcripts on file from the college/university.

    ESE

A portion of the 120 Component Points needs to include course work in Exceptional Student Education/Students with Disabilities (ESE/SWD). Teachers need to earn 20 ESE Component Points within the validity period of each temporary/professional certificate.  Visit this page to learn more about sending transcripts to the FL DOE.

    Reading Mandate

Teachers who hold an active, valid, certificate that includes any of the subject areas listed by the FLDOE will need to earn 40 component points (2 college credits) in evidence-based reading instruction and intervention (per Rule 6A-6.053, F.A.C). For credits to be applied toward the reading mandate, they need to have been earned within the last 5–10 years.

Professional Development grounded in the science of reading will prepare teachers to provide instruction to students with characteristics of dyslexia and students with significant reading deficiencies.

Training should include the use of explicit, systematic, and sequential approach to reading instruction to develop phonemic awareness, decoding skills, and multisensory intervention strategies.

Teachers who are required to earn 40 Component Points in Reading include:

    • Prekindergarten/Primary Education (Age 3-Grade 3)

    Renewal Credit Bank

Teachers who are currently employed can access a transcript of earned component points, and the category, in their Professional Learning Network (PLN) account.  If you have questions about how to read your credit bank, watch this brief video.

Teachers who are retired or recently employed (and not currently affiliated with another district) may request access to their PLN credit bank by emailing Kimberly Crowder, crowderki@pcsb.org.

On the PLN Home page, you'll find a link to a list of courses accepted by the district for ESE, Reading Mandate, and General certification hours, or visit the BEESS website. (Be sure to verify courses are accepted by the district before enrolling.)
